Gift ideas for long distance girlfriend

November 12, 2008

Hey there!

Okay, I have a girlfriend who is studying in England and im studying in New York.

Alright. And she’s expecting something BIG from me for her birthday. BUT I don’t know what to do for her. I won’t be there for her birthday. A surprise party won’t happen. Her ex had this surprise birthday party he planned with her friends, and HE himself celebrated her birthday with his friend on the webcam. They were LDR too. SO now, I’m with her, so I want this birthday to be greater then her ex. What should I do? She doesn’t like flowers and chocs (I dont know why). I did send her flowers before, but the feedback is less than what I’m expecting.

Please help me. I’m out of ideas. And moreover, I’ll be with there later the same month. And my previous idea is just surprise her with the present on that day. But after today’s argument, I know it won’t work.

Do you have any idea how to make the best birthday ever for her?

Thanks Michelle and Frank.

I think your best bet would be to make something for her. If Frank buys me something material… like say for Christmas… I have to think about what he gave me, because it just doesn’t stick in my memory. I remember things he actually made for me no problem. It’s because they meant so much more and have a lot of sentimental value. These things he made me cost him hardly anything. So they weren’t BIG in a expensive way, but were very BIG to me nonetheless because they show his love more than obligation to get me something.

Now there are lots of things you could do… You could write her your story of how you two fell in love. Print out your favorite emails that you wrote back and forth and make a little book out of them. Draw her a picture. Write her a poem. Build and decorate a keepsake box that she can use to save any letters, plane/bus tickets, or anything else she saves that is related to your relationship. There is a multitude of things. Take into consideration things she enjoys, her favorite color, etc, when making something for her.

She will be much more touched if she knows you took the time to make her something.

Of course you may include bought gifts along with a gift you make. I wouldn’t go over the top… the main gift is the gift you make. Get small things… her favorite lotion, perfume, calling card, candy, etc.

I hope this helps!

Hazim,

I personally don’t like the idea that this birthday HAS to be some huge big thing. And a lot rides on how you celebrate it. As if you have to prove that she made the right choice by being with you versus being with her ex. So, to me, that is troubling. Something to think about maybe. However, your question is on blowing the roof off her birthday. Michelle’s ideas are all good. And she is right, handmade=better than purchased gift (short of jewelry).

If you have the money, think about getting a singing telegram. You know, you hire a guy or someone in a costume to go to her place of work or residence and sing them a birthday song. She will never forget that. Follow it up with a nice gift. It seems like a romantic movie scene there, but things like that show you care and you are trying.

Call up the radio stations over there that she listens too and try and make a request for her.

You might be even able to email them if you can’t afford the oversees call.

I feel that she really liked the surprise birthday with all her friends. So maybe she is the type of person that wants a big deal made of her birthday. So by doing the radio thing, a ton of people will hear about her birthday and she will feel special.

So, other than Michelle’s ideas, here are some big time things. They range from free to expensive. Good luck, just make sure you keep some other ideas in there for other occasions! Don’t use them all up in one shot.
