Bond Touch Review: The touch bracelets that bring long-distance lovers closer than ever

I still remember the first time we touched – a big embrace on the street outside of a Greyhound bus. The floodgates of oxytocin released, not knowing if I was floating or melting into a puddle. The culmination of months of anticipation in seeing one another, the fireworks exploding in my heart and the face cramp from smiling more than most would consider normal. As we drove to a restaurant for our first real date, the sun shining on us like a spotlight, I had no comprehension of the physical void that I’d feel. In a few short days, I wouldn’t be able to reach over and grab her hand or offer a hug. Time was up, she got on that turncoat Greyhound bus and headed home. My heart was biopsied, and no words could fill it.

There is a lot of research on the science of touch: the endorphins that are released, the calming effect on the cardiovascular system, the feeling of safety. Saying, “I wish I could hug you” just doesn’t cut it. But that is what we’re left with – words. Trying to make up this feeling with FaceTime, an emoji, or a late night phone call.

Enter Bond Touch. A viable (near perfect) solution to a problem whose only other solution is teleportation. Really. The Bond Touch is a wearable device that connects via Bluetooth to your phone. You wear it on your wrist (inside or outside) and you have a direct connection to your love without having to unlock your phone. Tap it and your exact touch is transmitted exactly through a dedicated app to your significant other’s wrist. That simple. Tap the Bond Touch to communicate. The touch is similar to that of your phone’s vibration, but a little weaker (read: more appropriate for something on your wrist). That is also a super pleasing color that glows from the device to match the pulses that you’ve transmitted.

Bond Touch vibrates and glows when your partner touches their bracelet.

Michelle and I received a trial product of the Bond Touch before a recent business trip. I was going to be gone for a week. It had several years since we closed the distance, but we still vividly remember what it was like to be apart. We installed the app on the phone, charged up our Bond Touch using the provided charger, and selected our own custom colors. I left the next morning and wasn’t 100 yards out the driveway before I felt my first touch. I knew it was Michelle because the Bond Touch lets you connect with only one other person. There are no other built in features on the device, so I knew if it was buzzing, it was Michelle thinking of me. We each independently came up with our own code “buzz buzzzzz buzz” – I love you. While driving I could give a buzz to check in without breaking any phone laws.

When I got to the conference, they had a strict no phone policy. Cool. “Buzzzzzzzzzzz buzz buzz buzzzzzzzzzzz”. During dinner with colleagues it is generally a faux pas to use your phone. “Buzz”. In a non-intrusive way I had the ability to be in constant communication with Michelle. It really was a perfect way to communicate and give a little buzz of love without being rude to colleagues and speakers. Remembering my college experience, I feel like this would be the same experience while you are at a lecture hall during class or hanging out in your dorm after class. I used to be the guy texting under the table in class or always on his phone while with other people.

So, problem solved? Close. I mean, it isn’t a hug, its still a vibration. But it just feels different. It is our own private conversation without words. Its akin to holding hands and giving a squeeze or sitting next to each other and bumping your knee on hers. Touch, I’m hear thinking of you. Touch, I’m here with you. We put the battery through its paces and, in our experience, it lasts 2 days between charges. We charged it overnight and it was good to go. For those of you who leave the webcam on overnight or sleep with the phone on, charging overnight is perfect. For others, you might want to consider a mutual time to charge. The app saves touches that you might have missed while it was charging or disconnected from the Bluetooth. This is helpful for those over you in spotty reception areas or aren’t able to wear it because of work/uniform regulations. You can see from the pictures the Bond Touch is super sleek. There are alternative wristbands you can purchase to match your style (it comes with a black band by default) or you can make your Bond Touch more personal by replacing the black band with anything you want. The Bond Touch is waterproof so you can even wear it in the shower. Bond Touch makes an amazing holiday or anniversary gift.
