Dear Miss U,
My partner of 3 years announced he would be moving to Croatia from the UK for work (I knew he applied but didn’t think it would happen). We currently live in his house and he will be renting that out (not to myself as it is too big and expensive for myself and daughter -age 13- to live in and run). I will be honest I was angry with him, called him selfish – said he had no consideration for anyone other than himself, I have calmed down now and trying to see things more positive. He knew I wouldn’t be able to come with him as I have my daughter to consider and her education. …It’s OK for him, he is going off, new job, new people whereas I feel I am the one stuck at home picking up the pieces of what will be viewed by many as a failed relationship – I am getting that comment already which hurts. How can I look at things and think it will be OK? How can I make it OK? What do I need to do to be that supportive partner he wants without neglecting my feelings? [read more]
That Military Man
Dear Miss U,
I’ve been dating my boyfriend for 10 months. After being together for about 7 months he found out he was getting deployed for 9 months. When he first left we talked all the time and FaceTimed. As of recently, he started doing online classes and I work a lot. Now, when we do get a chance to talk, we bicker a lot and argue. As time goes by we try to not let little things bother us but it is becoming a reoccurring issue and I feel as though he has his life over there and I mine. It feels like we are both trying and we are still in this rut. I’m worried this distance will tear us apart and I’m not sure what to do anymore… [read more]
Married Alone
Dear Miss U,
My husband left for deployment almost 3 months ago and has 7-11 months left. I suffer from anxiety and depression. We talk a couple times a week if we’re lucky. I’ve asked him to write me letters so I have something to look forward to and to look over on the days that I don’t get to talk to him. I’ve asked him to send me emails. He always makes excuses as to why he hasn’t done it. He hasn’t read any of the letters or emails that I have sent him. We started reading the 5 Love Languages Military Edition before he left, he promised to finish, he still hasn’t. When we do talk, he seems so distant… [read more]
Non-Instant Communication
Dear Miss U,
My partner and I have gone through a lot of ups and downs and the latest down is the line between personal space and communicating (I don’t know if I explained that correctly). What I’m getting at is, simply, I have no friends. And my SO does. I’m starting to feel like I’m “smothering” them by texting or being annoyed if they don’t answer or if they don’t pick up a facetime call and it’s like I feel like I’m being annoying and clingy because of my lack of friendships or even “life.” [read more]
Pending Moves
Dear Miss U,
I have been with my boyfriend for over 5 months. I’m a single parent of an 11 year old. He’s a great man and we live 2 hours apart and he wants us to move in together. I’ve been at my job for 14 years. I’m scared? Insecure of leaving everything? What if it doesn’t work out? I’m miserable away from him. I love him. [read more]
A Day In the Life of a Working College Student and Navy Girlfriend
My story begins with a stoplight in downtown Charleston, SC. Yes, you heard me correctly; my sailor and I met at a stoplight. It was my freshman year of college and I was out with some friends one night when we pulled up next to a car with 5 Navy sailors about to graduate basic. My friend told them to meet us at the next restaurant and it all began from there…
A Day in the Life of a Marine’s Girlfriend: How do You Handle not Living in the Same Country?
He asked me to be his girlfriend on June 2012, I’m a PHD student in Europe and he is a Warrant Officer at the US Marines in the United States. He is American, I’m from the Caribbean, actually separated by 4000 miles. He is not currently deployed but at training school…
