Ideas & U

Dear Miss U,

My Senior Ball is coming up in May and I want to ask my boyfriend in a really cool way. No one that I ask has any good ideas but I want it to be awesome. I am going to visit him again in three weeks and I have to ask him when I’m there! Please help me!

Allison

Dear Allison,

Here are some random ideas just off the top of my head:

  • Carefully unwrap a kinder surprise and separate the sides if the egg so you can pull the toy capsule out. Replace the toy with a cute note and then put the kinder surprise back together again.
  • Make a cute or funny YouTube video and send him the link.
  • Photoshop your faces onto a picture of a couple in their formal wear.
  • Say it with flowers. Guys appreciate flowers too, just avoid typically girly arrangements.
  • Buy him a tie, cuff links or some other piece of manly apparel to wear on the night, then turn it into a treasure hunt. Remember that many businesses are more than willing to hold onto a clue card or even small parcel so you can involve your favorite restaurants or places you’ve been for dates in the past.
  • You could go all out and hire someone to serenade him in public, or hire a sky writer.
  • You could try contacting a website he frequents and get them to maybe change their banner to one asking him for a day or so.
  • You could make a reservation for dance classes for the two of you and make that a surprise date. When he asks why you’re there you can ask him or present him with flowers/chocolate/ some really sexy panties you’d wear under your ball gown and a card that can ask the question for you.
  • Bake gingerbread people in formal wear.
  • If he is in a band or plays sport you could get his team involved in the asking.
  • You could enlist all his family and friends to tell him to “Say yes” or send mysterious text messages/emails with the same message for a day. Make sure everyone refuses to tell him why, maybe they could pretend he’s crazy and they never said those two words at all. Then you can write “Will you be my date for the senior ball?” on a piece of paper (See Taylor Swifts music video “You belong with me” for an example) and as you hold it up say “Say yes!”

Dear Miss U,

I have no idea what to do for his birthday. We’ve been dating for 4 months and I want to do something for him. I can’t buy him anything because I don’t have money and my parents don’t approve of relationships so whatever I do can’t be something I’d need them for. I want him to be happy. Any good ideas? (I’ll take any and as much as you have, I’m desperate.)

Lisa

Dear Lisa,

Luckily it can be easy to make someone feel special and loved on little to no money. Here are some ideas:

  • Enlist a bunch of friends to send him birthday messages that say “Lisa loves you, have a great birthday!” You could even have these messages come in a theme, like supply each friend a joke to copy into their message or an inspirational quote. Another theme would be messages like “You are the milk to Lisa’s Oreo” “You are the peanut butter to Lisa’s Jam” “You are the sugar to Lisa’s tea” etc. Any two things that traditionally go together would work for this.
  • You could draw or Photoshop something beautiful that he could print out at home or use as a desktop wall paper.
  • Make him a card using pressed flowers.
  • Make him a pet rock that represents you.
  • Make a video for him that tells him all the things you wish you could do for him, write a funny song and set it to simple music.
  • Call him on the phone and sing to him. Not necessarily the happy birthday song though!
  • Write him a story or poem if you’re good with prose and he enjoys reading.
  • Make a recording of yourself reading to him, perhaps your favorite bed time story from childhood or a ghost story. Audacity is free software you can use for this.
  • Bake him a cake if you have time without your parents being around, or make a huge batch of cookies and keep some aside for him (I’m sure no one will notice a few missing from a large batch). You can package them nicely with ribbon or tissue paper left over from other occasions.
  • Decorate his car/ bicycle/ mailbox with balloons and streamers. Technically this isn’t “free” but you could do it really cheaply.
  • Have a couple of friends help you take a series of photos, spelling out “Happy Birthday” with your bodies, click here for an example.
  • Write him a love letter signed with a lipstick kiss.

Remember that the best gift you can ever give anyone is your time and love. It’s too easy to forget that.

I’d like to invite readers to comment and add their ideas to these two lists, don’t be shy!
